Identify common ports and cables

Distinguish USB, USB-C, HDMI, Ethernet and charging cables.

6 min read · Practical troubleshooting
  1. USB-A describes the familiar rectangular connector; USB-C describes a reversible connector, not one fixed speed or feature set.
  2. HDMI and DisplayPort commonly carry digital video and audio to monitors or televisions.
  3. Ethernet provides a wired network link, usually with more predictable latency than Wi-Fi.
  4. Check cable and port specifications for charging power, data speed and video support because identical-looking USB-C cables can differ.
