Use active recall
Test memory instead of simply rereading material.
5 min read · General educational guidance
- Close the notes and write or explain everything you remember about one small topic.
- Check the source, mark missing ideas and turn weak points into questions.
- Answer the same questions later without looking, using examples rather than memorized wording.
Practical example
After reading DNS, close the notes and draw the full journey from a typed domain to an IP address. Compare your drawing with the source, mark missing steps and retry the drawing two days later.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking at the answer immediately when recall feels difficult.
- Using recognition-only questions that can be guessed.
- Testing repeatedly without correcting errors from a reliable source.
Trusted sources and next reading
Active practice, feedback and spaced review usually improve learning more than repeatedly reading the same notes.
